Erissery Vanpayar (Red Cow Pea)

Loading       Preparation = 15 min (overnight soaking)   Cooking = 40 min  


A popular and simple delicacy from kerala made from red lobia or red cow peas (Vanpayar) and raw nendran banana.


Bean and Banana gravy

  1. Soak the cow peas (Brown bean) in water at least 6 to 8 hrs
  2. In a cooker pan add the soaked bean and sufficient water and cook for 3 whistles
  3. Now scrape the green skin of the banana and slice the banana to small dices
  4. Now in a bowl, add water and then soak the banana dices to it. Add turmeric powder, salt, stir the well and allow to soak for few minutes
  5. To cooked beans, add diced banana, chilly powder and water if necessary and pressure cook for 1 or 2 whistle
As this gravy gets cooked, prepare the coconut paste as directed in next slide.


 

Coconut Paste


  1. To a pan add oil, when hot add desiccated coconut, cumin seeds and stir till it turns light brown
  2. Allow it to cool, add little water and then grind it to a paste
Coconut paste is ready to mix along with seasoning. Watch next slide for instructions!

Final mix and seasoning


  1. To the cooked beans and banana gravy add the coconut paste
  2. Add some water, salt, curry leaves and mix it well
  3. Allow this gravy to cook till it boils
  4. Now to a seasoning pan add oil
  5. As the oil become hot, add mustard, red chilly and stir it for half a minute
  6. Add this seasoning to the gravy
